Task leadership

Much of the work of IEA-OES has been carried forward through its Tasks, led by experts who have coordinated international teams, brought together knowledge from across member countries and translated collaboration into practical outputs for the sector. We gratefully acknowledge the Task Managers who have contributed their time, expertise and leadership to the programme over the past 25 years.

Kim Nielsen
Denmark (Ramboll)

Led the development of recommended practices
for testing and evaluating ocean energy systems,
supporting more consistent approaches to
technology assessment.

Led work on modelling verification and validation
for wave energy converters, supporting greater
consistency and confidence in modelling
approaches.

Gouri S. Bhuyan
Canada (Powertech Labs)

Led international work on the integration of ocean
energy plants into electricity distribution and
transmission grids.

Andrea Copping
USA (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory)

Led collaborative work on the assessment of
environmental effects and monitoring approaches
for ocean energy development .

Roger Bagbey
USA (Cardinal Engineering)

Robert Thresher
USA (NREL; now National Laboratory
of the Rockies, NLR)

Led the exchange and assessment of information
and experience from ocean energy device projects,
helping make operational learning available across
the international community.

José Luis Villate
Spain (Tecnalia)

Led international work on the assessment of
levelised cost of energy for wave, tidal and OTEC
technologies, supporting greater understanding
and comparability of technology costs.

Henry Jeffrey
UK (The University of Edinburgh)

Led the development of an international ocean
energy technology roadmap, providing a strategic
perspective on technology development and
future priorities.

Yasuyuki Ikegami
Japan (Saga University)

Purnima Jalihal
India (National Institute of Ocean Technology)

Led international collaboration on the investigation
and evaluation of OTEC resources, bringing together
knowledge and experience from countries active
in ocean thermal energy (Task 11).

Matthijs Soede
European Commission

Jonathan Hodges
UK (Wave Energy Scotland)

Led the development of the Stage Gate Metrics
International Framework, supporting a more
structured and consistent approach to evaluating
the progress of ocean energy technologies (Task 12).

Srikanth Narasimalu
Singapore (Nanyang Technological University)

Led work on modelling verification and validation
for tidal energy converters, contributing to more
consistent approaches to technology modelling
and assessment (Task 13).

Yann-Hervé De Roeck
France (France Energies Marines)

Led the development and validation of
a methodology for assessing job creation in the
ocean energy sector, including a first global
assessment of direct employment.
